The 60 Islands are set in an aquamarine sea where sailors for centuries have anchored in the scalloped coves scattered amongst the islands to name a few Fat Hog's Bay, Treasure Point & Round Rock Passage all of which reflect a colourful past and stretch from Great Tabago in the west to Necker, 30 miles to the east. Enjoy the consistency of the Caribbean winds, visit the endless variety of good anchorages. Take a stroll along the unique palm-fringed beaches, most of which are only accessible by boat & explore the translucent waters that teems with exotic marine life & stunning coral reefs. Visit a number of protected anchorages on Tortola Island; Brandywine Bay, Cane Garden Bay, Hodge's Creek, Marina Cay, Soper's Hole & Trellis Bay. Wander through centuries-old ruins: The Dungeon, Fort George, Fort Recovery, Mount Healthy Windmill & Callwood's Rum Distillery, which is still in operation & rum continues to be made & sold in the boiling room, where the distillery's original boiler still operates & the rum is stored in some of the original storage casks. The old guard house is still intact & has been turned into an art gallery & gift shop.
Tortola where the yachts are based is the largest of the islands with its powdery white sands, lush green mountains & a sheltered harbour. The island offers an array of shops selling everything from local spices, jams & rums to handcrafted jewellery, silk-screened fabrics & local art.
The trade winds, generally blow from the SE at 10-15 knots through the summer months and NE at 15-25 knots through the winter months guarantee good sailing. There are some small currents, running at between 1 and 2 knots, in the passage between Tortola & St John.
Further navigational information can be found in 'The cruising guide to the Virgin Islands' by Nancy and Simon Scott. Imray chart A231 covers the sailing area.
Charters can be any length, depending on availability, from 7 to 14 days. Flights to Antigua from Gatwick, Heathrow and Manchester are followed by a short hop to Beef Island to our yacht base on Tortola.
